What leads us to dream has been a mystery throughout human history. 

In the past, cultures placed supernatural importance on the experience, deciphering prophecies or messages from the gods from what is experienced in the realm of dreams. It made dream interpretation a matter of shamans and religious experts, pulling sense from nonsense.

In the present, dream interpretation is no less important. Rather than a higher power, such psychoanalysts seek to uncover messages from one's own subconscious. Dreams may be seen as a tool for long-term problem solving: as the conscious mind rests, the unconscious can go on forming connections and finding solutions that may not be obvious in waking.

Another explanation is that dreams consist entirely of random gibberish, and carry no meaning whatsoever.

To find meaning in dreams, to find what you are looking for, requires reading between the lines. The world of the unconscious is not so concrete as the waking world. What seems steadfast or inscrutable in one moment may be utterly different in the next. You can never really be sure of what exactly is going on.
